It’s mostly unseen, but the building envelope is crucial to making any building a long-term success. Building envelope systems help manage the flow of air, vapor and heat as well as, if necessary, containing fire and smoke so people have time to move to safety. 3M has a broad portfolio of building envelope solutions including air barrier, fire protection, structural glazing and thermal protection products. Our building envelope solutions can help you:
And it isn’t just our products that help you stay on time and on budget. You can also take advantage of our resources to help with training installers, plus we have a world-class team of building envelope engineering experts to help answer questions when you come across new situations. From the planning stages through construction to final documentation and inspection, we want to help make the building envelope a successful part of your project, because out of sight doesn’t mean out of mind.
3M scientists and engineers have risen to the challenge of creating products that can be applied in all kinds of conditions, helping you work through more situations so you can stay on time and on budget.
3M experts work together to identify and address customer pain points so we can create products that are easy to work with and apply, saving on installation time and labor.
3M has portfolios across many parts of the building envelope, and we test to make sure products within each one complement each other. And when you need a solution in another area, you know each 3M portfolio has been engineered to work in a variety of situations, conditions and environments.

Construction-grade sealants help air and moisture barriers do their job of keeping outside elements out and inside elements in. 3M Adhesive Sealants provide reliable solutions for moving with expansion joints, providing moisture barriers and filling gaps.
3M provides air barrier products that help control the flow of air, moisture and heat to keep inside air in and outside air out. Our broad array of options include non-permeable, vapor permeable and through-wall flashing products that generally don’t require primer and can be applied in cold conditions (down to 0°F).
3M has been a firestop industry leader for over 35 years and we continue to innovate new solutions to add to our broad, comprehensive portfolio of firestop solutions that are watertight and fire, smoke and sound resistant. Our products include flexible duct wrap and endothermic mat systems as well as a complete line of through penetration and membrane solutions.
Below-grade jobs require top-grade adhesives that attach it all: membrane, drainboard, filter fabric and more. 3M spray-on waterproof adhesives bond for good without mechanical fasteners.
Insulation of all types needs to stay in place to be effective. 3M has bonding solutions you can rely on to be easy to use, then stick for the duration.
When you need to protect insulation on roofs or other exposed areas, 3M™ VentureClad™ Insulation Jacketing provide the answer. These tough, long-lasting multi-ply laminates provide an absolute vapor barrier to prevent moisture from migrating into insulation, even at seams. Trained installers can quickly install 3M™ VentureClad Products in the field using just a ruler, marker and scissors, even in extreme cold (as low as -10°F).
3M™ VHB™ Structural Glazing Tapes simplify processes to increase productivity – the strong acrylic adhesive provides immediate handling strength in the field, or the tape can be applied to panels at the factory and transported to the building site for attachment. The proven durability of these tapes makes them excellent for bonding glass panels into curtain walls, commercial window and door systems and skylight/canopy systems.
For reveals and inlays that remove easily once elevated, upgrade to versatile 3M spray adhesives, designed to bond to wood, plywood, wafer wood, fiberboard, PVC and polystyrene.
